Quartz Diffusion Furnace Tube Introduction

In semiconductor and photovoltaic manufacturing, diffusion is a critical process used to introduce controlled dopant atoms into silicon wafers and establish the required electrical properties. The diffusion process normally takes place inside a high-temperature furnace, where temperature uniformity, gas distribution, cleanliness, and process stability must be carefully controlled. At the center of this environment, the Quartz Diffusion Furnace Tube provides the chamber in which wafers are exposed to the required thermal and gas conditions.

The furnace tube is generally manufactured from high-purity quartz because the material can withstand elevated temperatures while maintaining excellent chemical stability. During diffusion, the quartz tube is exposed to process gases, dopant sources, oxygen, and high temperatures. A suitable quartz material helps minimize unwanted reactions and contamination, supporting a more stable processing environment.

A typical diffusion system places a wafer boat containing multiple silicon wafers inside the quartz tube. Process gases are introduced according to a predefined recipe while the furnace maintains the required temperature profile. Under controlled conditions, dopant atoms diffuse into the silicon surface to form the desired semiconductor structure. The performance of the furnace tube therefore has a direct relationship with process cleanliness, thermal stability, and equipment reliability.

Beyond diffusion, quartz furnace tubes can also be used for oxidation, annealing, and other high-temperature processes. Their cylindrical geometry allows them to integrate with heating zones, gas-delivery systems, wafer boats, and furnace sealing assemblies.

Quartz Diffusion Furnace Tube Features

Excellent High-Temperature Stability

A Quartz Diffusion Furnace Tube is designed to remain stable during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. Quartz can withstand demanding thermal conditions and is therefore widely used in diffusion, oxidation, annealing, and other furnace processes.

Its thermal properties also support repeated processing cycles when appropriate heating and cooling procedures are followed.

Strong Chemical Resistance

During semiconductor processing, the furnace tube may come into contact with oxygen, dopant gases, cleaning chemicals, and other reactive substances. Quartz provides good resistance to many process chemicals, helping maintain a stable internal environment and reducing material degradation.

The actual compatibility should be assessed according to the specific gas composition and process conditions.

Low Thermal Expansion

Quartz has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, helping maintain dimensional stability when the furnace temperature changes. Stable tube geometry is important for maintaining consistent spacing, gas flow, and thermal conditions around the wafer boat.

Smooth and Clean Internal Surface

The inner surface of a properly manufactured quartz furnace tube is designed to provide a clean and stable environment for wafer processing. A suitable surface finish can help support contamination control and reliable equipment operation.

Furnace Tube Dimensions Can Be Customized

Different diffusion furnaces require different tube configurations. Diameter, length, wall thickness, end shape, sealing area, flange dimensions, and other structural specifications can be customized according to equipment drawings and production requirements.
