1.MECHANISM OF ACTION
Pexiganan exerts its bactericidal effect primarily through a non-specific, membrane-disruptive mechanism. The positively charged peptide electrostatically interacts with the negatively charged phospholipids in bacterial cell membranes. This interaction leads to the formation of pores or channels, causing rapid depolarization, loss of membrane integrity, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately bacterial cell death. This physical mode of action makes it less likely to induce traditional antibiotic resistance.
