Product Overview

The Sheep and Goat Hoof & Head Scalding Tank conditions heads and feet before mechanical dehairing or manual finishing. A controlled hot‑water soak softens the hair follicles and loosens dirt without relying on an open boiling vessel. Stable temperature matters: water that is too cool lengthens the process, while excessive heat can damage the surface and make downstream handling less consistent.

The reference tank uses steam heating, a 2 mm stainless outer shell and 60 mm polyurethane insulation. A galvanized internal support carries the load, while a stainless steam pipe distributes heat. Temperature control is included. Basket, hoist, overflow arrangement and agitation are not fully described in the source and should be selected around batch size, operator ergonomics and local pressure‑vessel or steam regulations.

Working Principle

The tank is filled to its operating level and steam is admitted through the submerged stainless pipe. The temperature controller cycles the steam valve to maintain the set range. Hooves or heads are placed in a basket or otherwise retained below the water surface for a validated time. Heat transfers into the skin and loosens the hair. The batch is then drained or lifted and transferred promptly to the dehairing machine. Floating debris is removed, and the vessel is emptied and cleaned at the frequency set by the plant's hygiene plan.

Application

The tank belongs in the inedible or by‑product section upstream of a hoof, head or combined dehairing machine. It can support sheep, goats and, if separately engineered, selected cattle head or hoof duties. The project must provide a safe steam connection, condensate handling, drain, make‑up water, non‑slip operator area and a lifting method that avoids hand contact with hot water.

Reference Application Case

Reference application: a mixed sheep and goat plant processes heads and hooves in separate perforated baskets

The tank is held at 60°C, and operators record time and water temperature for each batch before transferring the baskets to a rotary dehairer. A small extraction hood controls steam around the loading point. The plant validates dwell time by observing dehairing quality and surface condition. The example is a process concept; exact temperature and exposure must be established for the raw material and local rules.

Advantages

  • 1. Controlled temperature gives more repeatable preparation than an open heated vat

  • 2. Insulation lowers heat loss and reduces hot external surfaces

  • 3. Steam heating can integrate with a central abattoir boiler

  • 4. Stainless shell and pipe are suitable for routine washdown

  • 5. Works as a dedicated pretreatment step for higher dehairing consistency
