About this product

Product information from the supplier.

Product Overview

Ammonium Hydroxide – also called Ammonia Solution or Aqueous Ammonia – is formed by dissolving ammonia gas in water. Unlike fixed alkalis such as caustic soda, it is a volatile weak base. This volatility is actually an advantage: when added to water or exposed to air, excess ammonia simply escapes, leaving no residual alkalinity or solid residue behind.

The product serves as a versatile alkalinity source across many industries. Major applications include flue gas denitrification (SNCR and SCR systems), textile processing, rubber latex coagulation, pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis, water treatment pH adjustment, and metal surface treatment.

What sets Ammonium Hydroxide apart from other alkalis is its combination of moderate strength and volatility. It provides sufficient alkalinity for most reactions, yet any excess can be removed by heating or aeration – a feature that proves valuable in pharmaceutical and electronics manufacturing where residual solids are unacceptable.

Typical concentration: 20% – 25% NH₃ by weight (equivalent to approximately 16–20% NH₃ as delivered). Custom concentrations available on request.

Grades Available: Industrial | Technical | Reagent

Why Choose Our Ammonium Hydroxide

Volatile Weak Alkali – Unlike sodium hydroxide which leaves solid residue, Ammonium Hydroxide can be driven off as ammonia gas when no longer needed. This property makes it the preferred alkalinity source for applications requiring zero residual solids.

Consistent Concentration – Our product maintains tight specifications on NH₃ content. Batch-to-batch consistency ensures predictable performance in denitrification systems and chemical synthesis.

Low Heavy Metals – Specially controlled for applications sensitive to metal contamination. Reagent grade available for pharmaceutical and laboratory use.

Flexible Packaging Options – Supplied in 2.5L, 5L, 20L, 30L jerrycans, 200L drums, and 1000L IBC. All shipments comply with IMDG Code, with proper corrosive and environmentally hazardous labeling.

Export Track Record – Our team brings 13 years of hazardous chemical export experience. Complete documentation – COA, MSDS, packing list, commercial invoice – ensures smooth customs clearance.

Specialized Handling Knowledge – Ammonia solution releases vapors that can be irritating. We provide proper vented packaging and work only with logistics partners trained in ammonia transport.

Solutions We Provide

Flue Gas Denitrification (SNCR & SCR)

In power plants and industrial boilers, Ammonium Hydroxide serves as the reducing agent for nitrogen oxide (NOx) control. For SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction), the solution is injected into the furnace at temperatures between 850°C and 1100°C, where ammonia reacts with NOx to form harmless nitrogen and water. For SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), the injection occurs upstream of a catalyst bed at lower temperatures. Our consistent NH₃ concentration ensures reliable NOx reduction efficiency across both technologies.

Textile Processing – Ammonia Mercerizing

Cotton fabrics can be treated with Ammonium Hydroxide as an alternative to caustic soda mercerizing. The ammonia treatment produces a silkier hand feel and different luster characteristics. Some textile processors prefer ammonia because it can be recovered and reused, reducing chemical consumption and waste.

Rubber Latex Coagulation

Natural rubber latex is harvested as a colloidal suspension. Ammonium Hydroxide serves as a preservative and stabilizer during storage and transport. It prevents premature coagulation by maintaining alkaline pH. When coagulation is desired, acid is added to neutralize the ammonia. This two-step system gives rubber processors precise control over the coagulation timing.

Pharmaceutical Intermediate Synthesis

Ammonium Hydroxide is used in the production of various pharmaceutical intermediates and active ingredients. It provides alkalinity for reactions where sodium or potassium ions cannot be introduced. Applications include the synthesis of sulfonamides, caffeine, theophylline, and certain vitamins. Our reagent grade meets purity standards for API manufacturing.

Water Treatment & pH Adjustment

For wastewater streams requiring alkalinity without permanent hardness contribution, Ammonium Hydroxide offers a solution. It raises pH effectively and, unlike lime or caustic soda, does not add calcium or sodium that might interfere with downstream processes. It is also used in boiler feedwater treatment for pH control.

Metal Surface Treatment & Cleaning

In metal finishing, Ammonium Hydroxide is used in alkaline cleaners for aluminum, copper, and their alloys. It removes light oils and fingerprints without attacking the base metal. It also serves as a complexing agent for certain metal ions in electroplating baths.

Related Products & Important Notice

Ammonium Bicarbonate (NH₄HCO₃) – A related ammonium salt, sometimes co-purchased for food processing and pharmaceutical application

Liquid Ammonia (NH₃) – Anhydrous version for higher-concentration requirements, used alongside aqueous ammonia in some chemical synthesis

Urea (CH₄N₂O) – Another nitrogen-containing chemical, often sourced by the same customers for fertilizer or chemical synthesis

Note: Ammonium Hydroxide is chemically distinct from fixed alkalis like caustic soda. Its volatility and ammonia odor require different handling considerations.

Important – Ventilation Required – Segregation Needed

Ammonium Hydroxide releases ammonia vapor, especially when heated or agitated. Store in well-ventilated areas. Under IMDG regulations, segregate from acids (violent neutralization reaction), oxidizers, and heavy metal salts. Containers should be vented to prevent pressure buildup. Frequently Asked Questions

Question

Answer

What is the typical concentration?

20% to 25% NH₃ by weight. Custom concentrations available.

How does it differ from caustic soda?

Ammonium Hydroxide is volatile – it leaves no solid residue when driven off. Caustic soda is non-volatile and leaves sodium salts.

Is it used for NOx control in power plants?

Yes – it is the standard reducing agent for SNCR and SCR denitrification systems.

Can it be used for rubber processing?

Yes – as a latex preservative and stabilizer during storage.

How is it packaged for export?

2.5L–30L jerrycans, 200L drums, 1000L IBC. Vented closures for pressure relief. IMDG compliant.

Does it require special ventilation?

Yes – store and use in well-ventilated areas. Ammonia vapor is pungent and can be irritating.

Do you offer samples?

Yes – sample orders available for process testing.

Lead time?

15–20 days after order confirmation, depending on quantity.
