The handle is set into the bag: the webbing goes down the inside of the mouth and is glued flat, so from the outside there are no rivets and no bumps. Bottles of skincare, a folded shirt or a small jewellery box can go in without catching on anything, which is what matters when the bag is used as retail packaging rather than as a parcel. The inside of the mouth stays smooth, so the bag does not mark what it carries.

The handle is wide black webbing, not a thin cord, so the weight spreads across your fingers and a full bag does not cut into your hand. The webbing is glued and pressed at the mouth, which is where a paper bag usually fails first, so the handle stays fixed while the bag is carried. Black webbing against white card also gives the bag its look without any extra printing.

The printing, the mouth gluing and the handle fitting all run one after another in our workshop, without sending the work out. The inset handle is the fiddly part: the webbing is glued down the inside of the mouth and pressed flat, and the two sides have to be glued at the same height, or the bag hangs unevenly in the hand, so this step is done by hand and pressed by machine, then checked bag by bag. The base is folded and glued flat as well — if the folds are not pressed properly the bag will not stand steady — so that step is looked over again after it comes off the machine.
